Ibiza has its residents – DJs either native to Ibiza, or DJs that have been going there so long they’re as much of an institution as they iconic venues they often play.

Though it’s a newer party, it’s agreed now that Croatia is here to stay. Inevitably then as festivals pass the crucial three year mark and become part of the landscape, the names behind all those warm ups, hit and miss boat parties and early punts become community legends. Not least because every single one of them are still pounding the Adriatic every summer – drawing ever more people to Cult Croatia.

Below are a few of the names that track by track, helped put Croatia on the map…

Jonny Dub

Jonny Dub

Manchester’s Johnny Dub has been with Soundwave festival and by extension Outlook and Dimensions more or less since the outset. “Unlike Ibiza, Croatia was built on boutique festivals – so everywhere you go people have their own little niche going on.” With his eclecticism boosted by both his own Hoya Hoya Manchester nights and long time MC & co-DJ Chunky, Johnny’s a driving force behind the ‘every-genre-goes’ mentality of all of the non-zrce festivals. Small wonder that he’s now become something of an emerging star in, of all places, Japan…

Riot Jazz

Riot Jazz

Another Manchester outfit and another group birthed by Soundwave, Riot Jazz can respectfully claim to have one of the most original sounds out there. They take 90s pop tracks, as well as current rock, house and drum & bass tracks, and re-format them as a 7 man brass band. The system clearly works – d&b stronghold Hospital Records released one of their remixes just last year. “6 months after we formed, we got invited to play at this new festival Soundwave. We literally jumped in a van and drove, from Manchester. It was that initial thrill that’s kept us ramped and moving ever since.”

Valentino Kanzyani

Valentino Kanzyani

Ally of Slovenian godfather UMEK with which he co-owns the Recycled Loops record label, Valentino Kanzyani has serious fan bases in Italy, Slovenia and Germany, all of whom back the man for his vinyl-focus sets (he also runs a vinyl only label – Jesus Love You) and his long discography encompassing imprints as prestigious as Cadenza. Small wonder he’s been a regular from early days at Zrce Beach’s Sonus Festival.

Jan Kincl Zero

Jan Kincl Zero

Pound for pound Croatia’s hardest working DJ, Jan’s the radio host of Zagreb’s immensely popular Radio 808, has held multiple residencies in Zagreb at venues where he’s supported the likes of Derrick May, Luke Slater, Green Velvet, Jeff Mills and others. He also runs his own Bi-monthly club night in the capital and when he has a spare moment or two in the summer he’s played Dimensions, The Garden Festival, Electric Elephant and Stop Making Sense.
